More About Tuning

The type of piano tuning we offer is fine tuning to A440. When we show up, we tune every single string, which is about 230 strings on average! The time it takes to tune a piano varies from instrument to instrument, but if a piano is close to pitch, an average tuning will take about 1.5 hours. If it is far from pitch, it will take closer to 2 hours, maybe even more. Other tuners may show up and just clean up the unisons, which are the groupings of two or three strings, so they sound better in general, but we correct every note in relation to all the others.

What if it’s been a long time since my piano has been tuned?

If it has been many years or even decades since a piano has last been tuned, it will not be able to hold pitch very long after its first overdo tuning. The strings and soundboard have a memory, so if it isn’t used to being close to standard A440 pitch, it will want to revert to what the pitch has been at for many years. This means that a neglected piano will need multiple tunings in a shorter time to get it back into shape. This is why it’s important to have your piano tuned at least once a year!
